Summary

For more than a hundred years humans, dwarves, gnomes and elves lived together in relative peace。 But times have changed, the uneasy peace is over and now the races once again fight each other - and themselves: Dwarves are killing their kinsmen, and elves are murdering humans and elves, at least those elves who are friendly to humans。。。 Into this tumultuous time is born a child for whom the witchers of the world have been waiting。

Ciri, the granddaughter of Queen Calanthe, the Lioness of Cintra, has strange powers and a stranger destiny, for prophecy names her the Flame, one with the power to change the world - for good, or for evil。。。 Geralt, the witcher of Rivia, has taken Ciri to the relative safety of the Witchers' Settlement, but it soon becomes clear that Ciri isn't like the other witchers。 As the political situation grows ever dimmer and the threat of war hangs almost palpably over the land, Geralt searches for someone to train Ciri's unique powers。

But someone else has an eye on the young girl, someone who understand exactly what the prophecy means - and exactly what Ciri's power can do。 This time Geralt may have met his match。

I've got mixed feelings about this one。 It had some interesting, fast paced parts。 But mostly it crawled along and dealt with a lot of pages on politics, which I've never been able to keep straight in real life, let alone in a book。 To me, this book didn't live up to the previous books, but I have a feeling it's an important build up for the stories to follow。 We'll see! This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 i really enjoyed this book。 one thing i love about sapkowski's writing is how he only really tells you bits and pieces from here and there, there are some gaps filled in along the way but for the most part you're on your own in figuring out the in between's, something i enjoy as it makes the book and the story feel very high paced, and almost frantic。 I particularly liked the beginning with Dandilion's concert and the arguing crowd as the means of telling you what people think of geralt and ciri i really enjoyed this book。 one thing i love about sapkowski's writing is how he only really tells you bits and pieces from here and there, there are some gaps filled in along the way but for the most part you're on your own in figuring out the in between's, something i enjoy as it makes the book and the story feel very high paced, and almost frantic。 I particularly liked the beginning with Dandilion's concert and the arguing crowd as the means of telling you what people think of geralt and ciri after cintra's demise。 I also really enjoyed the final chapter, such a sweet telling of the great bond Yennefer and Ciri form together over Ciri's training。Final thing I'll say is that unfortunately, being a woman, sometimes I have to force myself to withstand reading blatant misogyny as I enjoy other elements of what i'm reading/watching etc。 Unfortunately, the female characters are still represented super weirdly in these books。 They're sexualised, ultra-feminine, irrational, emotionally driven and just not well rounded as characters。 Geralt sleeps with a 17 year old at one point, cause why not i guess。I just WISH I could enjoy the majority of fantasy and things like it without having to see those the same gender as me be mistreated and represented in a weird manner because of their gender。 。。。more

I felt indifferent about this book。 Part of me enjoyed it。 The dialogue and character chemistry was great, and the somber tone fit well with the characters and world。 Some of the chapters reminded me of the short stories from the first two books, The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny。 However, I didn't think think this book lived up to the first two books, mainly due to poor pacing and plot structure。 My biggest problem with this book is that not a lot actually happens and the pacing feels slow。 I I felt indifferent about this book。 Part of me enjoyed it。 The dialogue and character chemistry was great, and the somber tone fit well with the characters and world。 Some of the chapters reminded me of the short stories from the first two books, The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny。 However, I didn't think think this book lived up to the first two books, mainly due to poor pacing and plot structure。 My biggest problem with this book is that not a lot actually happens and the pacing feels slow。 I could sum up the plot of this book in only one sentence。 Additionally, the ending of the book was completely anticlimactic and disappointing。 It was still a great chapter for fleshing out a relationship between two characters, but it didn't serve as a climatic ending that I was waiting for。 。。。more

This book reads almost like a bit of a Vince Gilligan show。 It spends a lot of time continuing to build the world and set out all the pieces on the board for the major players to make moves。 Moving on to Time of Contempt, where those pieces start to move, makes me appreciate this book a lot more。

Geralt of Rivia is the Gaurdian of Ciri。 They travel to the Witcher fortress and there her training as a Witcher begins。 This book feels different than the first two。 Rather than loosely related short stories, the author tries to make an entire cohesive novel and doesn’t entirely succeed。 The story still randomly changed POV with no apparent reason, especially the Dandelion chapters。 While I enjoy him as a character, several of his chapters had little point to them。 The things that made the firs Geralt of Rivia is the Gaurdian of Ciri。 They travel to the Witcher fortress and there her training as a Witcher begins。 This book feels different than the first two。 Rather than loosely related short stories, the author tries to make an entire cohesive novel and doesn’t entirely succeed。 The story still randomly changed POV with no apparent reason, especially the Dandelion chapters。 While I enjoy him as a character, several of his chapters had little point to them。 The things that made the first couple of books interesting were the crazy monsters。 This book only has one monster。 A lot of this book was devoted to rulers stunts to divert war。 It just felt like an entirely different book。 The plot was way too dialogue heavy。 There was just not enough action to break up the massive dumps of information, and I honestly don’t think much of the information was actually important at all。I am sure that I missed a lot of plot because I got so bored in some chapters。 Rating and TriggersPG-13- This book had implied sex。 Battle scenes。 There is a river that seems to be full of human waste。 。。。more

Brilliant, I have really enjoyed revisiting this world and it is all the better the second time。 This is such a dialogue heavy book, info dumpy in places。 It does not stop from being one of the most intriguing world's ever created, we find out so much in this book about the world。 The characters are perhaps the most compelling part of the book, they are well drawn and their arcs are developing。 Looking forward to the next book! I like to read low score reviews to see what people expected about the series going forward to a novel/romance format and I see a lot of faulty ones。I mean, it's not wrong to expect more of the same, or what the games are all about or even what the "main" character is all about: hunting and killing monsters。But I think the first 2 books were already to not only satisfy and make a point about that, but to also say what the series was going to be about, how the world don't need witchers anymore。 B I like to read low score reviews to see what people expected about the series going forward to a novel/romance format and I see a lot of faulty ones。I mean, it's not wrong to expect more of the same, or what the games are all about or even what the "main" character is all about: hunting and killing monsters。But I think the first 2 books were already to not only satisfy and make a point about that, but to also say what the series was going to be about, how the world don't need witchers anymore。 But not because it's getting easier to live and no monsters in sight anymore, but because the world is decrepit, conflict all around and monsters aren't the thing the people who live in that world worry the most anymore。So for me this is the best one of the series I've read until now, the focus on the training of Ciri which is and feel like the actual main character of the series, how she turns into a Witcher and a Sorcerer and we see through her eyes how the world is, she is a more complex and developed character than Geralt (which is a fault that he appears so little in the books 3 and 4, I expect a lot more of him), that I don't think is so mysterious, he just doesn't have a lot going on, he was just a witcher his whole life, people are expecting to see something that simply doesn't exist and don't need to。 He is a simple man。I do have complaints about the book, I don't think Triss did a whole lot, at the end she doesn't even feel she was there and the Jaskier part was kinda too long。 But other than that I don't think putting some random monster slaying just because would be doing a lot of good for the story, the story is past that, it's now all about what happens to Ciri and little political things。 。。。more

I just really love these characters and the sense of humor。 I really like how the short stories The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny tie into this FIRST official book in the series。 Definitely a great way to get into the world。 I’m pleasantly surprised by the cast of female characters and how inclusive it is with the female perspective。 It’s not exactly something I expected or see too much in fantasy。The most hilarious bit to note about this book is the very passive aggressive letter Yennefer writ I just really love these characters and the sense of humor。 I really like how the short stories The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny tie into this FIRST official book in the series。 Definitely a great way to get into the world。 I’m pleasantly surprised by the cast of female characters and how inclusive it is with the female perspective。 It’s not exactly something I expected or see too much in fantasy。The most hilarious bit to note about this book is the very passive aggressive letter Yennefer writes to Geralt, her dearest Friend。 I’m complete trash for this ship。 I also love Ciri and her character development, the female friendships formed, her coming of age story。 There’s not much plot, it moves pretty slowly。 A lot of the book is spent on these characters bonding and there’s a political backdrop, some talk of prophecies, with a plot set in motion。 。。。more

I am delighted with my new fantasy series only I found out due to watching “The Witcher” on Netflix with my son who knew a lot more about it due to playing the game。 I had ordered the trilogy back in January and never got to it til last Friday night at 11p。 m。 and finished it this evening。 It was a great, super read!! i would recommend watching the show first because the 1st book picks up where the show ended。 it’s an intricate story with a plethora of really good actors。 Truly。 I have immediate I am delighted with my new fantasy series only I found out due to watching “The Witcher” on Netflix with my son who knew a lot more about it due to playing the game。 I had ordered the trilogy back in January and never got to it til last Friday night at 11p。 m。 and finished it this evening。 It was a great, super read!! i would recommend watching the show first because the 1st book picks up where the show ended。 it’s an intricate story with a plethora of really good actors。 Truly。 I have immediately started book 2 and I can tell already I am going to love it。So there is a book before this that i didn’t realize due to the trilogy not including it。 I do think that should be read first。 I’m going to order it。 For sheer enjoyment and if you like the genre I don’t think you can go wrong!! Very excited to see this live action on Netflix in December。 I love the relationships and dialogue between characters that make it so realistic and relatable。 The story line is always engaging even when there isn’t a new monster。

This plot deserves the extra star for originality both in plot and envisioning the new dimensions。

I really liked it; I like the materiality of the Witcher world, how everything feels heavy。 I think it maybe can grow in light of later books, nothing much really happens。 The structure is cool, where you see the development of earlier chapters through other characters eyes, and so it builds on what came before。 I find it silly that all the major women are super hot super models, tho。 I think it maybe is supposed to say something about the vanity of these specific women, but it's still silly。 I really liked it; I like the materiality of the Witcher world, how everything feels heavy。 I think it maybe can grow in light of later books, nothing much really happens。 The structure is cool, where you see the development of earlier chapters through other characters eyes, and so it builds on what came before。 I find it silly that all the major women are super hot super models, tho。 I think it maybe is supposed to say something about the vanity of these specific women, but it's still silly。 。。。more

Really cool。 Scene based fantasy at it’s best。 An epic without becoming bogged down like most epics and thus unreadable。

Besides the show, this was my introduction to the Witcher books, and I love them。 In less than a few weeks I'm on the 3rd。 The wit in the writing reminds me of GRRM and the diverse characters keep me entertained。 Besides the show, this was my introduction to the Witcher books, and I love them。 In less than a few weeks I'm on the 3rd。 The wit in the writing reminds me of GRRM and the diverse characters keep me entertained。 。。。more

The whole thing about the book is killing monsters yet there's only 1 in this book and a few thugs。 Which Are all dealt with the same away a piourrte here a piourrte there and a good slash or thrust。 Seriously calm down with the turns plus it has some very esoteric ideas about HEMA (look it up) and just assumed the layman would understand。 Luckily I know a bit of that to understand the kind of actions being taken4。 Finally the most shocking for me。 The fucking misogyny and creepy shit。 Bloody hell Evey women and Girl in the story gets some character development but just SOME。 And the rest of the Time the characters get their panties wet for our main hero and are head over heels。 At some point 1 the characters tries to like rape Gerald and in few instances 12-14 year old girls are sexualized almost like a bad porno。This isn't even excluding the "first anthology" (which btw way better then this book) which kind talks about a topless 14 year old but it makes sense kinda in the context of what happening。 Either they were being sexualized there or my mind needs to get outta the gutter。 Usually I don't give a damn but when like 1/4th the story used up talking about sex fantasy it's too much So basically if you really liked the Anthology this book is for you it expands on the universe and the gaps left in the Anthology。But lacking a direction the twists and turns as well as the action The entire reason I read the fucking thing in the first place we're those reasons。 Good heavens 。。。more

After reading the two first books—that are actually just anthologies of short stories / novellas published in magazines before Sapkowski started the series in earnest—this book is a serious change of pace。 Like one of those waterslides where you’re cruising down whip fast and then hit the pool and everything slows wayyyyy down。 If I’d have started with this book I don’t think there’d have been enough to draw me into the next book。 I’m confident in Sapkowski’s storytelling and think this will pay After reading the two first books—that are actually just anthologies of short stories / novellas published in magazines before Sapkowski started the series in earnest—this book is a serious change of pace。 Like one of those waterslides where you’re cruising down whip fast and then hit the pool and everything slows wayyyyy down。 If I’d have started with this book I don’t think there’d have been enough to draw me into the next book。 I’m confident in Sapkowski’s storytelling and think this will pay off, but this isn’t a great start… Plenty of fantasy spends plenty of time telling stories of a special kid learning magic and wizardry, so it makes it all the more strange that this book, which is almost exclusively filled with that trope, seems to lack the sparks。 Also, as an aside, I am disappointed that after reading the stories and talking them up to a friend as NOT having a strong “chosen one” trope, it seems I spoke way too soon。 😑But all that said, I already checked out the next one… 。。。more
